VISITING HURON REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER: NNCC President, Lori Neal, had the pleasure of taking a trip to South Dakota to present another NNCC Quality Improvement Award. On Monday, October 9, 2023, Lori visited Jennifer Jungemann, and her team at Huron Regional Medical Center (HRMC Dialysis) in Huron, South Dakota to present the NNCC’s Quality Improvement Award. NNCC’s Nephrology Nursing Quality Improvement Award is awarded annually. Quality Improvement is the foundation of improving care delivery and patient outcomes. Nurses, Advance Practice Practitioners, and Technicians are essential stakeholders in improving the process. NNCC believes that applying quality improvement strategies to the care of nephrology patients ultimately leads to safer and better outcomes.
Jennifer Jungemann and her team created a quality improvement initiative titled: Implementation and Roll-out of the Hemodialysis Technician Program.
THE PROJECT OUTCOME: As a result of implementing the program staffing shortages were eliminated. Operating costs were reduced due to no longer hiring travelers or paying the wage differences between nurses versus technicians. Nursing staff satisfaction improved after bringing on new staff and the addition of mentoring opportunities. Patient satisfactions scores have also increased with patients enjoying the additional staff and bonds formed with new employees versus travelers who are there for shorter periods of time.
Lori had a great time meeting Jennifer and her team. “Jen is very proactive in education of staff and collaboration with other programs in the area!” Jennifer let us know that they plan to use the $1000 award on educational material for their program. Lori was also pleased to see that the hospital management joined in the celebration and award presentation.
If you are certified by NNCC and working on a nephrology nursing quality improvement initiative, the next deadline to submit the Quality Improvement Award application is June 15, 2024.
