CAREER REFLECTIONS: My World as a
Hemodialysis Technician
NNCC is delighted to share insights and experiences of our community. In this reflection, NNCC’s Mary Greensides, CCHT-A, discusses her commitment to her specialty – and her challenge to fellow healthcare professionals.
Reflecting on my career as a hemodialysis technician, I remember the early mornings and hard work, but what truly stands out is the pride I feel in making a difference in my patients' lives. Let’s look at the reasons we chose to make this our career. We all have our individual stories that touched our hearts and made us fall in love with our profession. If you are like me, you can’t imagine doing anything else. Our commitment to excellence needs to begin with each of us. We have the power and ability to invest in our own personal and professional growth, earning respect and recognition. We need to be an example for our newer technicians. We are the frontline representatives of the dialysis unit and must demonstrate our dedication to advancing our specialty for the sake of our patients.

Technicians, consider elevating your CCHT certification to CCHT-A for personal satisfaction and validation of your knowledge and skills. Stand proudly in the dialysis community, proclaiming, "I AM A STEP ABOVE!"
Dialysis Employers, acknowledge and promote higher education and certification, and establish a competitive edge within the dialysis community. This leads to a highly skilled workforce and improves the quality of care our patients receive. Acknowledging and promoting continued education speaks volumes about the company’s commitment to providing the most knowledgeable and up-to-date technicians to care for our loved ones. Providing healthy compensation will support employee retention and engagement. Higher certification within the workforce will lead to increased productivity and professional growth.
So, as we come to the end of my letter to fellow healthcare professionals, I challenge Dialysis Technicians and Dialysis Employers: WHO WILL BE THE FIRST TO EMBRACE THIS CHANGE TO BECOME THE EMPLOYEE AND EMPLOYER OF CHOICE?
