Clarity in her career path has never been an issue for Theresa Mottes.

“Nursing was a calling. I just always knew I’d be a nurse. And, I always knew pediatric nursing was my focus. It’s what I was meant to do.”

Meet the new NNCC president, a dedicated leader who has more than 25 years of pediatric renal replacement therapy experience under her belt. She’s a passionate leader who shies away from the spotlight, putting her energy into patient safety and deep connections.

NNCC Announces New Quality Improvement Award: Apply by June 15

NNCC has launched a new award recognizing an individual or organization who has participated in a quality improvement project that promotes optimal patient outcomes in nephrology. The recipient will receive $1,000, national recognition, and a personally delivered engraved plaque during an awards ceremony. Kidney Health Atlas Predicts Disease Rates Worldwide, Access Challenges

A global study on kidney disease suggests that by the year 2030, 14.5 million people will have ESKD worldwide. Additional estimates by experts predict more than 1.2 million of those patients will be treated in the United States by that year. (Healio/NN&I; 4/1519)

Nephrology Practices Face Changes as Need for Kidney Care Grows

It’s estimated that 1 million people will need kidney disease treatment by 2030. This is an important statistic to keep in mind as Medicare seeks improved outcomes at lower costs and as the average age of nephrology professionals inches up. (Healio/NN&I; 4/11/19)

Free Online Toolkit on Care Transitions Available

The Forum of ESRD Networks Medical Advisory Council has developed a free, online Transitions of Care Toolkit to assist with quality improvement projects, improve patient care planning, and address challenges in care transitions. Breakthrough Kidney Disease Treatment Offers Hope for Those with Diabetes

A recent UK study on the drug canagliflozin, used to lower glucose levels for people with diabetes, was also found to protect against kidney failure. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, also showed heart failure was reduced by more than 30%. (American Association for the Advancement of Science; 4/15/19)
