Honoring a Visionary Leader:
NNCC Executive Director Nancy Gallagher
During the 16 years Nancy Gallagher led NNCC as its executive director, the organization grew from one certification program to six. Few in the nephrology community would deny she was a driving force in the industry, helping NNCC put certification for nephrology nurses and technicians on the map.
“I’m proud to have been able to serve this strong and growing community,” said Gallagher, who retired from the executive director spot in March. NNCC’s new Executive Director is Katherine H. Houle, another dedicated nephrology health care leader who is equally committed to leading the organization to continued success.

NNCC Eligibility Criteria Changed for Recertification
The NNCC Board of Commissioners and the Examination Boards have voted unanimously to expand the continuing education requirement for recertification.
While NNCC encourages you to seek continuing education specific to your nephrology specialty, we have broadened the continuing education requirement to recertify your credential. The changes are as follows:
- CCHT: 30 hours of continuing education required; 10 of those must be through programs specific to nephrology.
- CCHT-A: 40 hours of continuing education required; 15 of those must be specific to nephrology.
- CD-LPN: 30 hours of continuing education required; 10 of those must be specific to nephrology.
- CNN and CDN: 45 hours of continuing education required; 15 of those must be specific to nephrology.
- CNN-NP: 150 hours of continuing education required; 50 of those must be specific to nephrology.
All contact hours must be accredited through one of NNCC’s approved accrediting bodies unless otherwise stated in the eligibility criteria. Congratulations to Winners of Career Mobility Scholarships
One of NNCC’s primary goals is to support the education of certificants and help them achieve career success. There were so many outstanding applicants received for the Career Mobility Scholarships for Technicians and LPN/LVNs that we increased the number of $3,000 award recipients from five to seven this year. Rochester Hospital Dialysis Receives 2019 NNCC Advocacy Award
Rochester General Hospital Dialysis in Rochester, NY, has been named the 2019 recipient of the NNCC Advocacy Award. The facility not only supports certification and ongoing education of its nurses, but it demonstrates deep appreciation for nurses who have earned their certification. In fact, almost 90% of the nurses at Rochester’s Outpatient Dialysis unit are certified.
NNCC congratulates each and every nurse at Rochester Dialysis, as well as the leaders and executives who have fostered a robust and supportive environment.

NNCC Announces New Quality Improvement Award:
Apply by June 15
NNCC has launched a new award recognizing an individual or organization who has participated in a quality improvement project that promotes optimal patient outcomes in nephrology. The recipient will receive $1,000, national recognition, and a personally delivered engraved plaque during an awards ceremony. Submit the electronic application before June 15, 2019.

Text Reminders Helped Patients Get Treatments

Study Shows Diabetes and Dementia Hike Mortality Risk
Patients with type 2 diabetes and dementia had faster chronic kidney disease progression and were at an increased risk of dying from any cause than those without dementia, according to a research presented at the recent National Kidney Foundation meeting. (Renal and Urology News, 5/9/19)

Study: Nurses Eager to Help Those in Need, But Need Support
Nurses are ready and able to make Americans healthier by addressing the social determinants of health - such as access to healthy food, stable housing, reliable transportation, and equitable education - but they perceive barriers to doing so, according to the survey results of 500 nurses by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Type 2 Diabetes Increases Cancer Risk, Study Finds
